Overview
While the education students receive in band class is very beneficial, it pales in comparison to what a student can learn one-on-one with a private instructor. If your son or daughter is serious about their music education, you should really consider allowing them to get private lessons. Private lessons are NOT just for those struggling with learning their instrument, and is probably even MORE beneficial to those who are ahead of their classmates. Providing new challenges above and beyond the band classroom is one of the primary functions of the private instructor.
Lessons are not for students who are unwilling to work hard and practice assignments given to them by a lessons teacher - they are for motivated students looking to sharpen their technique and expand their musical knowledge.
We have some wonderful instructors available in our area (please get in touch with Mr. VanToll or Ms. Vo for their contact information), and Marshall Music in Kalamazoo also has private lesson instructors. Rates differ with each instructor but typically range between $15-$20 for an half hour lesson once a week. The student or parent will need to contact the instructor to arrange a time and location. Students that are really interested in taking private lessons but are in need of financial help can talk to their band director about getting a private lessons scholarship from the Band Boosters.
