Grading
There are three components to a student's grade at the Middle School level: Performances/Exams, Practice Logs/Quizzes, and Daily Work. These are weighted categories: Performances/Exams make up a 50% of a student's grade, Practice Logs/Quizzes make up 40%, and Daily Work makes up 10%.
Performances include the required concerts (listed on each band's 'Class Expectations' page) as well MSBOA District Band Festival (for 7th and 8th graders). Unexcused absences will result in a 'zero' for that event. Misbehavior (on stage, during warm-up, sitting in the audience, etc.) will result in a lower grade and disciplinary action. Exams will happen a few times during the year and students will be given adequate time to prepare. Chair auditions and major song tests will be graded as exams and involve performing the material individually for the director.
Practice Log grading is explained in the above Prezi slide presentation. Quizzes will happen fairly often on songs, scales, or concepts that the students are currently studying in class. The style of quiz varies - each student might be asked to perform individually in class, or the instrument section might be asked to perform for a group grade. What they are asked to perform is short and shouldn't take more than a day or two to prepare for if they have been keeping up on their practice.
Daily Work grades are compiled at the end of each week - 5pts/day. Students earn 5 points by bringing their instrument (woodwinds must also have a working reed), music, and a pencil to class and being in their seat and ready to work. Students who fail to follow through on these expectations will receive a "zero" for the day.
